Bengal Tigers - Habits

Bengal Tigers are one of the two cat species that like water and can swim up to 30 km. They prefer not to climb trees, but are capable of doing so and can make vertical leaps of up to 10 m. These animals can reach the speed of 60 km per hour due to the fact that their hind legs are longer than the front. But Bengal Tigers can run fast only for short distances. They do not possess great stamina and sleep up to 18 hours a day. The ability of a Bengal Tiger to roar is well known. The roar can be heard 2 miles away or farther. It is related to the arrangement of the bones under the tongue.

During the hunt Bengal Tigers are very patient; they watch the prey and wait for a good moment to attack. They catch the prey by its neck and the tiger's strong jaws and teeth kill the prey very quickly. Bengal Tigers have very good vision that allows them to hunt during nighttime. Their sense of smell is also extremely keen. After meals Bengal Tigers hide the remains of the prey covering it with vegetation. These animals are territorial and the home range of males varies from 25 to 250 square miles. They mark the territory, like cats, by spraying their urine together with a glandular secretion. These animals are solitary and gather only to share a large kill.

Bengal Tigers - Protection

Many countries of the Tiger-range protect these animals and are members of CITES (Convention of International Trade of Endangered Species) that bans the trade of Tiger body parts. Tiger hunting is banned in most places. Bengal and other species of Tigers are raised in sanctuaries and zoos, but, without wild life, the Tiger population will die out. In countries of poor economies where Bengal Tigers live, lacking necessary funds make protection of these animals very difficult.
