Bengal Tigers - Status
Bengal Tigers were killed by Indian and British royalties as a part of a sport and their numbers declined at a fast rate. At the beginning of the 20th century there were about 40,000 of Bengal Tigers in the Indian subcontinent and today only about 3,000 of them remain. Three Tiger subspecies have become extinct in the 20th century: the Bali Tiger, the Javan Tiger and the Caspian Tiger. There exist 5 surviving species.
They are endangered because human development approaches their habitat leaving little place left for the tigers. Agricultural expansion, timber cutting, new roads, hydroelectric dams and human settlements push Bengal Tigers into smaller areas. Asia's population grows rapidly and demands more land. Tigers compete with humans for food because local people hunt the same prey as Tigers do. The poaching of these animals is widespread. Also the Bengal Tiger is killed, particularly if it becomes a man-eater or it raids domestic animals.
Also, Chinese folk medicine utilizes many parts of the Tiger's body as cure against different disorders, even though western medical experts claim that there is no curative power in Tiger bones. In some places Tiger parts are a delicacy served at banquets. The use of products derived from Bengal Tigers is considered to be a symbol of wealth.
