This species lives in tropical forests, high-altitude Himalayan forests, swampy reedlands, grasslands, and deserts. They are highly territorial and live solitary. These large animals need great amounts of food; they are able to consume up to 90 lbs of meat at a time. They are very strong and use their strength successfully when attacking their prey and pinning it to the ground. They feed on antelopes, deer, pigs, buffalo and small elephants. They also undertake attacks against livestock. Old or disabled species may perpetrate attacks against humans.

The wild population of this species is estimated at about 3000 individuals with about 300 of them living in captivity. Most of them live in India, some are found in Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Burma. In most countries the government protects these animals. However, the killing of these unique felines still continues, and at least one species is lost every day. Therefore, the population of wild felids is still declining, and we may lose one of the wonders of the world in a couple of decades.
