Their coat is short and thick, bright fawn to reddish tan, shading to white underneath. There are rugged black stripes on their coat. The length of their body ranges from 5 to 9 feet. Their weight is 350-550 pounds. These cats can eat 40 pounds at once and can stay without food for several days. They feed on medium-sized and large game, such as deer, buffalo, swine, antelopes, small elephants and so forth. They rarely attack humans and prefer to avoid close contact with them.

These wild cats have large eyes with first rate vision. Their ear flaps are well developed and hearing is excellent as well. They have strong, powerful jaws with large canine teeth. Their paws are heavily padded. They have sharp retractile claws and use them on prey. These felines usually stalk their quarry until it gets close enough for the animal to jump on its back.
