For many centuries, these cats were thought to be human eaters and therefore they were exterminated. Actually, sometimes these animals can hunt people, especially those animals that are senior or ill and unable to hunt their usual prey. Currently, there are five remaining subspecies of the Panthera tigris; three became extinct in the 20th century.
