These large creatures don't possess great stamina and have to sleep up to 18 hours a day. They are active at night time, and prefer to hunt at dusk and at dawn. Their striped coat is an excellent camouflage than makes them practically invisible under cover. They can hide for a long time and attack immediately when prey gets close enough.

These animals are one of the cat species that enjoys water and can swim very well. They are one of the fastest running animals able to reach the speed of 60 km per hour in short distances. Being pure carnivores, they are specialized on big game, such as buffalo, antelope, deer and sometimes domestic cattle. It takes a lot of skill and patience for them to hunt and the mother teaches her kittens to kill prey. At the age of about 8 weeks, cubs start following the mother on hunting trips. By the age of 6 months, they can chase small or medium-sized game. They become fully independent at the age of 1.5 years old.
