Adult males of this species reach up to 3 meters from head to tail and weigh up to 230 kg; females are a little smaller, reaching up to 2.5 meters in length and weighing about 140 kg. These animals are easily recognized by their striped coats. Males are very territorial and maintain large home ranges. They do not allow competing males to come within their ranges but prefer not to fight. A rival male usually leaves after receiving a warning sign from the dominant animal.
