This species became endangered in the middle of the 20th century; only about 3000 of these animals are left in the world today and several hundreds of them are kept in captivity. Their population declines due to illegal hunting and habitat destruction. If this tendency persists for another several years, the process will become irreversible and there will be none of them left by the middle of the 21st century.
