These are one of the biggest wild cats; males reach up to 3 meters in length and up to 230 kg in weight. These animals are characterized by striped fur; usually they have orange stripes on the black background. White individuals with dark stripes are seldom met in the wild. It has been counted, that a white cub is born once per every 10,000 births. White species grow faster and larger than their orange brothers, and they are more vulnerable in the wild. About 500 species have been bred in captivity, and they suffer serious breeding depressions due to inbreeding.

The reproductive rate of the cats is rather slow. Tigresses give birth every 2-2.5 years, but sometimes wait 4-5 years between the litters if food is scarce. Mating can occur any time of the year, but it usually takes place from November to April. A common litter is 2-4 cubs, and one of them dies in infancy. Males do not get involved in raising their young and may pose a threat to cubs. Therefore, females are very suspicious of males coming within their small home ranges and may pick on anything and anyone who gets dangerously close to her lair.
