The animals of this species are characterized by reddish orange coat with narrow black, brown or gray stripes in a vertical direction. The underside is creamy or white with black stripes. There exist several rare variants: white, red, albino, black and stripeless individuals. They are strong and agile predators and feed on deer, antelopes, swine, buffalo and domestic cattle. They rarely attack humans and usually avoid contact with them.
