It is more correct to call these animals chinchilla colored. They are not albinos, as they have pale coat with dark stripes, striped skin, blue, green or orange eyes and colored nose and paw pads. In the wild, these animals are very rare; in captivity, they are estimated at about 500. This coloration is defined by a double recessive allele contained in the genetic code of a normal species, and the appearance of such a cub is only possible if both parents carry this gene. Statistically, this gene occurs only once in every 10,000 births. In the public eye, chinchillas are but the most admirable.
