The animals have low occurences of reproduction. The gestation period of this animal is about 100 days. Females are able to give birth to up to 6 cubs, but a usual litter consists of 2-3. Cubs are born blind and are quite helpless at birth. Their mother will feed them her milk for the first 3-6 months. Males do not stay with one female for a long time and do not take part in raising the cubs. Females do not come into heat before their young are between one and a half and three years old. Females reach maturity and become fully reproductive by 3 years of age. Nursing mothers can be extremely aggressive.

picture, kittens
There are four other subspecies of these animals, these subspecies are: Siberian or Amur tiger, South China tiger, Indochinese tiger, and Sumatran tiger. All these cats are considered endangered and three species are already extinct. Those are Bali, Caspian and Javan tigers. This particular subspecies is the most numerous so far, but its population is decreasing at a threatening rate. These sad tendencies come as a consequence of man's destructive activities, such as deforestation and poaching.
