The males of these animals are larger than females. An average weight of the males is 500 lb, and females weigh 300 lb. The length of the males is 10 feet, and females are 9 feet. These animals live not more than 15 years in the wild. Males are highly territorial and maintain areas covering 20 to 250 square miles. Females have smaller home ranges that are overlapped by those of males. They are solitary animals and hunt singly; they prefer not to encounter humans. They have long hind legs that make them good jumpers.

These wild cats can be found throughout India from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin. Other types of these animals can be found in Burma, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, and Bali. They inhabit dense thickets, long grass, and tamarisk shrubs along river banks. They are concentrated in sanctuaries and reserves of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal. Their population has dwindled over the past century, and chances are they will be gone by the middle of this century. However, they are successfully bred in captivity, but many of those species have a hard time getting used to natural environment.
